| 9' x 12'02" Serapi Item# 1885 Traditional Serapi Rugs, named after the village of Serab, originate in the Northwestern of Iran near the well known village of Heriz. The area around Heriz is one of the most important and prolific carpet producing regions in Iran with rugs predating the 1800s. This traditional design of rug has been labeled the “workhorse” carpets of Iran because of their incredible durability. This is a result of their heavy construction – thick foundation and dense pile of thickly spun, hardwearing wool. Interestingly, the wool’s hardwearing character is due in part to the copper content of the water the sheep in the area consume. The most distinctive features in the design of a Serapi are the large central medallions and the bold motifs in the corners of the field. Also present in the field are oak leaves and other plant forms. As far as color, these carpets are dominated by a rich rosy brown which, in naturally dyed rugs, is obtained from the root of the madder plant. Other important identifying colors are varieties of blues, reds, greens and ivories. |
