| 6' x 9'06" Agra Item# 919 Agra is a city in northern India, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, and has long been a center for the production of carpets in India. It is said that carpet weaving was started in Agra centuries ago when the royal families demanded carpets that were too large and too heavy to be imported even by elephants, and so arose the need for local production. Agra carpets, like many carpets from India, borrow heavily from Persian design, the most common being the medallion. Agras tend to have fairly open fields colored in delicate olive greens, tans, and blues, and some finer details may include pineapples, pears and other such cone-like figures. Often times the use of these particular shades of color will lead a carpet to be called an Agra. |
